1. Promote Adenosine Triphosphate Production
Increased ATP production is thought to be the enhancement of tissue healing and able to reduce fatigue.
2. Promoting Collagen Production
Red and N-IR light has been shown to promote an increase in collagen synthesis and mRNA production, and to induce a more than threefold increase in procollagen production.
3. Cell Proliferation
Red to IR wavelength range can also stimulate proliferation of various cells involved in tissue healing, including fibroblasts, keratinocytes, and endothelial cells.

Red to IR light can induce vasodilation, particularly of the microcirculation. This effect may be mediated by the release of preformed nitric oxide. Such vasodilation could accelerate tissue healing by increasing the availability of oxygen and other nutrients, and by speeding the removal of waste products from the irradiated area.
6. Alter Nerve Conduction Velocity and Regeneration
Some studies have shown increased peripheral nerve conduction velocities, increased frequency of action potentials, decreased distal sensory latencies, accelerated nerve regeneration, and reduced nerve scarring in response to laser stimulation, all of which indicate increased activation of nervous tissue by laser light. This effect has appeared to be more pronounced with red laser light than with blue or IR. These positive effects occur in response to laser irradiation over the site of nerve compression and are enhanced by irradiation of corresponding spinal cord segments. In addition, laser irradiation has been found to induce axonal sprouting and outgrowth in cultured nerves and in in vitro brain cortex.

The effect of visible red light is similar to near infrared, but red light exceeds infrared light in increasing peripheral nerve conduction rate, increase in activity potential frequency, shortening peripheral sensory nerve latency, improving nerve regeneration rate, and decreasing nerve scarring.
